Cape League Cleans up Again in Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft
New York, NY – All totalled, the Cape Cod Baseball League once again placed its firm mark on the Major League First Year Player Draft, when last week 146 former Cape League stars were selected by Major League franchises to join the ranks of professional baseball.
More than half of the Cape Leaguers selected in the draft – 74 – were selected in the top 10 rounds. Last year, only 65 Cape Leaguers were taken in the top 10 rounds. In 2002, MLB franchises selected seven Cape Leaguers in the first round, in contrast with nine taken this year in the first round and two of the top of five players selected overall. Last year, the Cape League was not represented until Drew Meyer (South Carolina) was taken by Texas with the 10th overall pick.
