Victory and defeat for the Mets
Up and down games for the boys in blue

After a four-game winning streak the Hyannis Mets once again tasted defeat, first at the hands of the Bourne Braves and again with the Chatham A’s, before reclaiming their game with a victory over the Harwich Mariners.

On Sunday the Mets met the Braves at McKeon Field in Hyannis for what turned out to be quite a drubbing. After Patriot Publisher Rob Sennott threw out the first pitch, the game got under way.

The Braves garnered all the runs they needed to secure their win during the first two innings with Mets pitcher Alex Hale. Before Hale retreated to the dugout, he allowed seven hits that included two home runs by Braves players Austin Krum Mitch Mooreland.

Relief pitcher Matt Daly managed to get things under control during his best outing of the season with a powerful fastball. Unfortunately the Mets offense couldn’t back him up. Although they managed to reach first, no one was able to advance, leaving the beleaguered team scoreless and the Braves with five.

On Monday night the Mets traveled to Chatham for a match against the Chatham A’s. While the Mets fell to Chatham, no one could begrudge the home team their win in light of an incredible performance by three-year A’s vet Robert Woodard.

Woodard ruled supreme over the game, sending 110 pitches across the plate, striking out eight, walking two, and never seeing a fourth batter in any inning.

On the Mets side of things, Aaron Brown in a strong performance lasted seven full innings, striking out seven and walking one.

The 1-0 game marked the 300 th win for Chatham head coach John Schiffner, who joined the league in 1993.In spite of two consecutive shutouts the Mets remained determined, an attitude that paid off on Tuesday evening when they trounced the Harwich Mariners 7-2, a win that put them only two points behind the Wareham Gatemen in the Western Division standings.

By the top of the fifth inning the Mets had a nice 6-0 lead. Three runs were scored in the third, including noteworthy RBI singles by Ryan Flaherty and Sean O’Brien.

On the mound, Josh Collmenter was a dynamo, netting nine strikeouts and just one walk during 5 2/3 innings.

Relief pitchers Adam Reifer, Ben Jeffers and Daniel Latham were also solid, helping to secure the win. Reifer pitched an impressive 94-mile-an-hour fastball while Jeffers and Lathem each had a scoreless inning in locking up the victory.

Tonight the Mets face Cotuit at home in Game 4 of the race for the Barnstable Patriot Cup. The Kettleers lead 2-1 over Hyannis.
