A tidy series of wins this week have put the Mets in third place in the Western Division, only two spots behind the Cotuit Kettleers.

STEEE-RIKE – Gary Lee winds up in preparation for a pitch during a recent Mets game at McKeon Park. The Mets are now in third place in the Western Division.

On Sunday night the Mets men faced the Brewster Whitecaps in a game where late-inning thrills made the match.

During the 8-7 victory by the Mets, drama was the name of the game. Brewster rallied from a four-run deficit, giving Hyannis a bit of a scare.

Tension remained until the final out, when a game-saving outfield assist was made by right fielder Milan Dinga. Dinga, whose quick recovery of a single by Brewster’s David Cooper, followed by a perfect throw to catcher Jackson Williams, had Matt Cusick of the Whitecaps out. Barnstable Patriot Cup.

In the eighth inning James Darnell sent along a double, his second of the game, that brought in the go-ahead run for the Mets. Darnell also hit a double in the fifth, taking third on a single from Dinga, and coming home when Ramon Corona slammed in a three-run homer.

Corona remained a fixture in the game, singling past a dive at first by the Whitecaps’ Matt LaPorta. He then stole second and claimed third on a sacrifice hit by Jared McGuire before ruffling the feathers of Whitecaps’ coach Bob Macaluso with a close slide into home plate. When the dust settled in Brewster, it was Mets 8 and the Whitecaps 7.

On Monday night, the Mets faced Falmouth in a three-hour match at McKeon Field.

Carrying along some of the drama of the previous game against Brewster, the Falmouth match was rife with enough theatrics to make it really exciting.

Mets slugger Matt Mangini officially joined the ranks of power hitters, belting a two-run homer over the right field fence with two outs on the board at the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Mets a 7-4 lead. The hit also provided padding when Falmouth answered with a homer by Taylor Harbin and an RBI single from Mitch Canham in the eighth.

Reliever Daniel Latham was awesome in the ninth, getting Brett Wallace to hit a pop fly and Warren McFadden to strike out looking. Latham was assisted by first baseman Sean O’Brien, whose tremendous leaping catch of a line drive by Harbin sealed the win.

The victory helped the Mets advance to third place in the Western Division and return to .500 for the season.

Interrupting the winning stride, the Bourne Braves scooted past the Mets on Tuesday night in a 4-3 victory.

Hyannis had a 3-1 lead in the sixth after a sweet homer by Jon Townsend, who finished two for three with a double. Jared McGuire scored on Townsend’s hit after previously scoring on a two-out base hit by Matt Mangini.

Unfortunately the Mets lead wasn’t solid enough as the Braves put in a successful rally in the eighth inning, scoring three runs to put them on top for the win.

Although reliever Ben Jeffers had a perfect ninth inning, the Mets couldn’t add another tally to the board.

Tonight the team battles Chatham at McKeon Field. On Sunday, they face Cotuit in Game 5 in the race for the
