Hyannis faces hurdles
After three wins, team drops two

 June 29, 2006

It was a roller coaster week for the Hyannis Mets as they netted two losses, interrupting a three-game winning streak that occurred before the weekend washout.

On Monday the Mets traveled to South Yarmouth where they faced the Y-D Red Sox at Red Wilson Field.

It was a true pitcher’s duel, as the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when a bad call worked in the Sox’s favor. Buster Posey was tagged by the Mets’ second baseman in what should have been an obvious out, but was ruled safe by the field official.

With Posey securely on second and the Mets rattled by the call, defenses were down when Brad Emaus clocked a double, sending Posey over the plate for the only run scored in the game. "One call makes the difference," said Mets Field Manager Greg King.

On Tuesday the Mets again took to the road, this time heading to Wareham to play the Gatemen, who took the Mets 6-2.

Scoring happened late in this game, with Wareham netting five runs during their last three trips to the plate to earn them a victory over Hyannis.

The Mets were down by one in the seventh after scoring their first run. Although runs were scored by Mark McGonigle (Houston) and Ryan Flaherty (Vanderbilt), the Mets proved no match for the Gatemen this time around.

Wareham starter John Ely struck out five and walked four of the Hyannis team, but allowed no runs. There was a tense moment in the fifth when Ely loaded the bases, but quick reflexes by teammates saved him.

McGonigle was the top hitter for the Mets, going two for four with one run while cleanup hitter Sean O’Brien (Virginia Tech) drew three of the games 15 walks.

At press time the Mets were scheduled for a makeup game against Orleans at McKeon Park, with a Thursday game against Harwich. Weekend games include trips to Falmouth and Bourne.
