Surprise, Surprise! Rained Out Again

 14 July 2006

Mother Nature, a huge pain for the entire Cape League all season long, once again decided to wreak havoc with the league’s schedule with constant rain Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Falmouth has now had six games this year postponed due to bad weather.

Although the rain subsided late yesterday afternoon, there was not enough time for the field to be made game-ready for the Commodores and Cotuit Kettleers in what would have been a big divisional contest between two of the top teams in the west division. The Kettleers currently boast the league’s best overall record, at 14-6-1, while the Commodores, winners of five of their last six games, are in third place in the west with a mark of 11-11-1. Wareham is in second place in the division, a half-game ahead of Falmouth, with a 12-11 record. Hyannis also is right in the middle of things as the fourth-place Mets are only one point behind the Commodores at 10-10-2.

Only Bourne can truly be written off in the west division playoff race. The Braves have had a terrible season thus far, thanks to a plague of injuries, and enter today’s action with a record of 4-13-2.

Yesterday’s rainout against Cotuit as well as Wednesday’s washout at Bourne have yet to be rescheduled. The league will have to get creative to figure out how the games will be played as both the Braves and Kettleers have makeup games already scheduled on the next two scheduled off days.

Falmouth returns to action for a busy weekend of games starting this afternoon with a road game at Yarmouth-Dennis at 5 PM. The last time the two teams hooked up was the start of the Commodores’ current hot streak, which saw Falmouth rally for a 5-3 victory. Tomorrow the Commodores are back at home for a game against the Brewster Whitecaps. The Comms and Caps have met twice already this season, with each team winning at home. Falmouth is scheduled to be on the road both Sunday and Monday, with 5 PM starts against both Cotuit and Hyannis respectively.

The last time the Commodores were on the diamond for a game was on Tuesday evening when the club traveled to Wareham for a game against the Gatemen. Falmouth overcame an early 1-0 deficit to smack around the Gatemen 9-2, picking up a game on the team directly ahead of them in the standings.

Cory Luebke, of Ohio State, picked up the victory for the Commodores on the mound, improving to 3-1 overall on the season in the process. Luebke was very strong all night long as he scattered four hits and gave up just one earned run while walking three and striking out three. The only run that Wareham would muster against Luebke was in the bottom of the second inning when Dominic de la Osa (Vanderbilt) singled to right and then scored on a Beamer Weems (Baylor) triple to left. Wareham would acquire just one more hit against the Commodores’ starter the rest of the way.

Falmouth tied it up in the fourth on an RBI double by Warren McFadden (Tulane), one of two run-scoring doubles on the night for the Falmouth right fielder. They then took the lead for good in the top of the sixth when Brad Chalk (Clemson) singled and went to third on a hit by Mitch Canham (Oregon State). A wild pitch then allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Two more Falmouth runs crossed in the seventh. With two down, Chalk drove in Taylor Harbin (Clemson) with an infield hit to make it 3-1. Then Canham followed with an RBI single to make it a three-run game.

Falmouth busted things wide open in the ninth inning as they scored five time in all. Chalk had an RBI double in the inning, Andrew Walker drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, a run scored on an error and then McFadden drove in two more with a big double to left center. The Commodores’ damage all came on just two hits in the frame.

The top of the order did the bulk of Falmouth’s damage in the game as Chalk and Canham combined for six of the team’s 10 hits. Canham was 3-for-3, raising his batting average to .385 in the process, and Chalk went 3-for-5, upping his average to .303. McFadden and Stan Widmann (Clemson) had the other hits for Falmouth, with each man getting a pair. Chalk is now ninth in the league in overall batting average while Canham does not yet have enough at-bats to qualify for the race.
