Trundy Happy With 2006 Club

 22 August 2006

The 2006 Falmouth Commodores did not make the playoffs. They came close, but in the end, the Commodores came up a few games short of the postseason as they were edged by eventual Cape Cod Baseball League runners-up the Wareham Gatemen.

While the end result left Manager Jeff Trundy wishing his team had had a few more runs in a couple of close ballgames, Trundy, who understands the big picture of what the CCBL is all about as well as anyone, left Falmouth believing that his team had gone about things the right way.

Trundy said he was pleased that his team seemed to play its best baseball later in the season as the games became more important, which is not always the case for many CCBL teams, as some teams just go through the motions. “That’s a credit to the organization in general,” Trundy said from his summer home in Mashpee before returning to Connecticut. “When kids play hard through the summer, it is a credit to the type of organization we have. (The players) appreciate what’s done for them here. You have to be fortunate to have the kind of kids who will play hard every day and we certainly did.

“We had a great group of kids and that’s not just a canned comment. Things didn’t fall into place (at the end of the season), a lot of things didn’t work for us, but we were close. You can look back at a few things early on and know that a difference would have been made had we not lost kids to Team USA and to injury. Losing (Ross) Detwiler (to USA) was huge, and then we didn’t get (Cole) St. Clair (who also went to USA). Right there we have two first-round arms that are gone. Then we had a kid like Scott Carroll, a temp that came in and did a good job. He was pitching pretty well and then got tendonitis. There’s such a fine line here between winning and losing, and having those guys could have made a big difference.”

While the season could have gone better on the hill for Falmouth, it certainly was a strong year for the club in the field and at the plate. Trundy, who hopes to return again next season for his eighth go-round in Falmouth, believes that the Commodores will continue to bring in good players as relationships he and the club have with some big schools continue to pay off.

Falmouth has benefited from associations with schools such as Oregon State, Clemson, Tulane and Texas Christian over the last few years. Those four schools alone have provided the team with tons of talent. Just this year those four universities provided Falmouth with six all-star players.

As for not making the playoffs, Trundy said that it would have been nice, but there are bigger things to play for on Cape Cod. “If a championship comes along, that’s great....If you gear your whole season down here to making the playoffs, you’re setting yourself up for disaster. You have to look at the big picture.”
