Commodores Bested By Sox, 7-4

 4 July 2006

Falmouth squandered a 4-1 lead, allowing the visiting Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to tie things up in the top of the seventh, take the lead in the eighth and then add an insurance run in the ninth. Y-D came to town and gained a 7-4 win over the Commodores, leaving Falmouth winless since last Thursday afternoon. The team is now 6-8-1 overall and has hit rough times ever since its season-high four-game win streak ended.

Starter Shooter Hunt (Virginia) deserved to get the win after two-hitting the Red Sox over the first six innings. But, with his pitch count nearing 100, he was lifted after six strong innings and relieved by Scott Carroll (Missouri State).
That’s when things began to fall apart for Falmouth. Carroll retired the first man he faced and then could not find the strike zone as he walked the next two batters on a total of nine pitches. The Commodores then went back to the pen, summoning Sean Morgan (Tulane) to the hill for the first time this season and Morgan was greeted by Tyler Henley (Rice) in the rudest of ways. The Sox’ center fielder, who was playing in his first Cape League game of the season, connected for a long homer over the center field fence on a 1-2 pitch, tying the score at 4-4.

With the game tied heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Falmouth bats let a great scoring opportunity go by the wayside as the club left the bases loaded. After a double play put an immediate damper on the frame, Ryan Anetsberger (Illinois State), Warren McFadden and Taylor Harbin (Clemson) all singled in succession. Harbin’s single was hit too hard to score Anetsberger from second base, but with power-hitting Aja Barton (Tulane) coming to the dish, the team still had a good chance. Unfortunately the big left fielder did not show much patience against the Sox’ Jordan Pacheco (New Mexico) and weakly grounded out to end the inning and the threat.

It was the second inning in a row in which the team left the bases full. In the sixth the team had the sacks juiced with one out, but Pacheco got Barto to hit into a fielder’s choice, with the out being recorded at the dish, struck out Jeremy Farrell (Virginia) and then retired Stan Widmann (Clemson) after a walk to Matt Nuzzo (Brown) had gave the team a 4-1 lead..

Morgan pitched well enough to get the Commodores out of a jam in the eighth, but the team’s defense backfired in a major way. With men on first and second, and two down, Morgan got Stan Strausbaugh (West Carolina) to hit a seemingly harmless grounder to short. Unfortunately Widmann booted the ball, allowing the runner to take third and then threw it away in an attempt to catch Brad Eamus (Tulane) at third. Matt Wallach (Cal State-Fullerton) then singled to center to make it 6-4. An RBI single by Eamus in the ninth accounted for the final score.

After an Eamus homer in the top of the second, Falmouth tied it on a solo shot by Warren McFadden in the bottom of the inning. The shot gave McFadden the outright league-lead in homers with five.

In the fourth Falmouth went up a pair on another long ball. This time it was Taylor Harbiin (Clemson) that touched up the Red Sox for a homer as the Commodores’ second baseman drilled one deep over the left-center field fence, making it 3-1.

Falmouth was outslugged 14-3 Sunday by Chatham with the A’s Rich Sirois (UConn) taking a perfect game into the eighth before a walk to McFadden. A single by Barto broke up the no-no bid and Farrell’s second homer accounted for Falmouth’s only runs.
The team is at Harwich tonight at 7 PM. Thursday the club returns home for a 7 PM game against Harwich.
