Cape League hosts military all-stars

Thirty-three players from all 10 franchises will represent the Cape Cod Baseball League this weekend when they take on the U.S. Military All-Stars as part of the 2006 Red, White and Blue Tour of America.

The CCBL will host two exhibition games: Saturday at Veterans Field in Chatham at 7 p.m. and Sunday at Lowell Park in Cotuit at 4 p.m.

In addition, the military all-stars will host a free children's baseball clinic 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Field in Chatham and noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at McKeon Park in Hyannis. The clinics are sponsored by Bank of America.

Four Cape Cod players: former Barnstable standout Matt Costello (Iona) of the Kettleers; 2005 Big East Player of the Year Jared McGuire (Boston College) of Harwich and the Hyannis Mets; and the Wheaton duo of catcher Adam LaPlante of Harwich and Jake Yagjian of Brewster, both temp players for the Brewster Whitecaps.

The CCSOS and Boy Scout Dylan DeSilva will collect items for care packages to be sent to U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq during both games, which will include pre-game festivities that will honor the U.S. Armed Forces. View www.capecod4thetroops.com for a list of items needed.
