Neither of Barnstable’s two Cape Cod Baseball League teams will take part in this season’s playoffs. While Cotuit dropped out last week, Hyannis’ last-ditch efforts were thwarted by the Gatemen on Tuesday. Nonetheless, both teams ended their seasons on a high note, earning wins in their final games.

Kettleers

The Kettleers’ 2007 season came to a victorious end Wednesday night at Lowell Park when the Cotuit crew defeated the playoff-bound Y-D Red Sox 11-9 in eight innings.

At first it seemed that the Kettleers were destined for another loss after Y-D’s Gordon Beckham hit a grand slam that put the Sox ahead.

But Beckham made an error in the eighth that turned the tables and gave Cotuit the win.

After a number of strikeouts and players stranded on base, Cotuit began to come alive in the fourth when Josh Harrison crossed the plate after stealing second and advancing to third. Harrison was brought in on a single from Caleb Joseph.

In the fifth, Reese Havens doubled to left to bring in Correy Figueroa, while Robert Stock clocked his fourth homer of the year in the sixth, a nice three-run hit.

The seventh inning saw two more runs for Cotuit, one unearned and one on an error, before Havens hit a two-run double down the right field line in the eighth to bring in Tony Delmonico and Brian Wilson. Havens then scored the winning run when Beckham missed fielding a grounder from Josh Harrison.

Aaron Baker added some insurance for the Kettleers with a double to left center that brought Harrison in to bring the final score to 11-9.

2007 was a tough season for the Kettleers, who dropped from an early second-place spot to last place largely due to pitching woes and powerful opponents.

Last Friday, with playoff hopes already dashed, the Kettleers took up bats against Chatham A’s, who defeated Cotuit 6-1.

The Kettleers had snagged the early lead on a two-out RBI single from Ryne White, but were soon overtaken by Chatham.

Cotuit grabbed an early 3-0 lead in Saturday’s game against the Mets in Hyannis when Correy Figueroa scored JB Shuck on a squeeze, followed by a left-field triple from Harrison.

After Hyannis’ James Darnell evened things up with a two-run double, Cotuit regained the lead thanks to a nice homer from White that brought in two runs.

The Mets tied things up again late in the game but, in spite of extra innings, both teams were locked at 5-5 when the game was called after the 10th due to darkness.

The two teams met again on Sunday night in Cotuit, and again the Kettleers seemed on their way to a win, leading Hyannis 3-1 in the fourth.

A grand slam from Hyannis’ Darnell dimmed hopes, though Cotuit valiantly soldiered on, tallying single runs in the sixth and the seventh to bring the game to yet another tie on a homer from Brian Wilson and an RBI single from Figueroa.

Cotuit fans watched the potential win slip away, however, when the Mets’ Kiko Vazquez knocked in the game-winning homer in the 10th.

On Tuesday the Kettleers faced the Y-D Red Sox in the first of two games, scoring only one run in nine innings of play, when shortstop Reese Havens brought in catcher Robert Stock on a single in the third inning.

Cotuit ended their 2007 with a record of 14-27-03.

Mets

The Hyannis Mets ended their 2007 season in a good way with a 9-3 win against the Falmouth Commodores in their final game on Wednesday night.

Ricardo Pecina notched his first win of the season when he struck out 10 batters in just five innings of work after relieving starter James Jolicoeur. Pecina only allowed two hits and one unearned run while on the mound for the Mets.

It was all about the fourth inning for the Mets, who scored five runs against the Commodores, securing a comfortable lead on the way to the win.

Although the Mets weren’t able to make the playoffs, their final games of 2007 went well, allowing them a third place finish in the overall standings.

Last Friday the Mets faced the Falmouth Commodores, coming away with a 2-1 win.

The Mets scored their first run in the fourth on a solo homer by Dan Brewer, who ended the season with seven homers total.

The second run for the boys in blue came in the eighth when Shane Peterson reached on a bunt before heading all the way to third on a throwing error. A passed ball allowed Peterson to score, clinching the win for the Mets.

On Saturday the Mets joined the Kettleers for game five of the Barnstable Patriot Cup, which ended in a 5-5 draw.

After the Kettleers tallied three runs in their half of the third, the Mets came back to plate two. After singles from Patrick Long and David Macias, followed by two strikeouts, Darnell smacked a double down the right field line to bring in Long and Macias for two runs.

The Mets hit the boards again in the seventh when Phil Bell scored on a beautiful triple from Macias. Hyannis tied things in the eighth on yet another Dan Brewer homer that also brought in Darnell.

With the score set at 5-5, the game went into extra innings in spite of poor weather conditions and encroaching darkness, and was called as a tie in the 10th.

The next afternoon the Kettleers and Mets came together again for their final game of the season, again locking into a tie that was ultimately broken by a tremendous homer from Hyannis’ Vazquez to give the Mets the win and the Barnstable Patriot Cup.

On Tuesday the Mets played a make-or-break game against the Wareham Gatemen. In spite of stellar play and excellent pitching from Bryce Stowell, the Mets just couldn’t catch a break, falling to the Gatemen 1-0.

The Mets had a number of solid hits but couldn’t get a man to home plate in the nine-inning event that determined the Mets playoff fate.

The Mets completed the 2007 season at 20-21-03 overall.
