Although the Mets secured a 3-0 win against Chatham on Wednesday, the game garnering the most attention was their nearly 98-hour episode with the Orleans Cardinals.

After a rainout on Friday night, the teams came back together on Tuesday. The contest was slated to start from the beginning, but the Cards asked the CCBL commissioners that the game be resumed from its fourth-inning stopping point, at which time the score was 3-1 in favor of Orleans. Nearly 98 hours (97:51 to be exact) and 12 innings later, the Mets stole the show with a final score of 4-3. Hyannis kicked the game off by loading the bases on back-to-back walks. Unfortunately for the Mets, batter Patrick Long struck out looking. Long got another chance in the ninth and this time found success, smashing a double off the center field wall to bring in Phil Bell for the tying run. James Darnell brought home the win for Hyannis in the 12th when his hit to right field plated teammate Joey Gonzales with the winning run. Darnell’s homer on Friday night, his third of the season, had given the Mets their lone tally before the game was called on account of lightning and rain.

The Mets took up bats against the Brewster Whitecaps on Saturday. In spite of the allegedly lucky date (07/07/07) Hyannis fell 8-4. At first it seemed that Hyannis might escape with the win when the game came down to one run in the eighth. Then the Whitecaps roared into action, garnering seven runs on five hits to clinch the win.

The Mets battled the Bourne Braves on Sunday and were again defeated 5-4. Hyannis took an early lead in the game when Dan Brewer walked with the bases loaded, but it was short lived as the Braves responded in the bottom of the second to bring the game to 1-1. At the top of the fourth, the Mets again took the lead thanks to consecutive singles from Phil Bell and Shane Peterson, bringing the score to 3-1. The Braves tied it in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer from Brian Pruitt before the Mets scored an unearned run in the seventh to make it 4-3. The Mets saw their chances at a win dashed, however, when the Braves scored two runs on a single in the bottom of the seventh to claim the lead for good at 5-4.

On Monday night the Mets didn’t fare much better against the Orleans Cardinals who won 7-1. Although Hyannis out-hit Orleans, the Mets wound up stranding 13 runners. Dan Brewer brought in the Mets’ only run on an RBI, going 2-for-5 at the plate, while teammates Shane Peterson and Ryan Jackson each went 2-for-4.

On Tuesday night the Mets enjoyed a shutout against the A’s at a home game in McKeon Park. Stellar pitching from Bryce Stowell and Tyler Stohr laid the foundation for the win with Stowell allowing only three hits in seven innings before being relieved by Stohr, who pitched two perfect closing frames. David Macias started off the scoring for the Mets with a nice infield hit in the second to bring the score to 2-0. Macias went 2-for-4 in the game. James Darnell added his two cents with an RBI single in the seventh to cap the score at 3-0.

At press time the Mets were scheduled to face the Falmouth Commodores at home followed by an away game in New Bedford today to face the Wareham Gatemen at Walsh Field.
