Game Four of the Barnstable Patriot Cup competition may have been played in Cotuit on Saturday evening, but it was all about the Hyannis Mets.

Led by stellar pitching from Jason Franzblau and backed by a nice string of hits from the Mets batters, the boys in blue emerged victorious, 6-1, to take a one-game lead in the race for the Cup.

In eight innings, Franzblau was simply dominant, only giving up one run in eight hits while striking out eight in the Kettleers lineup.

Hyannis hit the boards early after David Macias walked before advancing to third on a sweet single from Scott Elmendorf and being brought home on another single from third baseman James Darnell.

Much to the dismay of Cotuit pitcher Rex Brothers, the Mets then loaded the bases with a walk from Dan Brewer. A passed ball allowed Elemendorf to come home from third.

Then it seemed to be the power of three when Mets added their third run of the day in the third inning. They loaded the bases this time with no outs on the board. Shortstop Ryan Jackson grounded into a double play bringing in Darnell to score from third to giving the Mets a 3-0 lead.

Cotuit finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning when Robert Stock clocked his third homer of the year, but it wasn’t enough to encourage a Kettleers rally.

The Mets maintained control, adding an unearned run in the seventh when Darnell was brought in by Dan Brewer, making it 4-1.

Hyannis added two runs on three hits in the ninth. Shane Peterson, Brewer and Kiko Vazquez each connected, with Brewer and Vazquez garnering RBI’s to bring the Mets’ tally to six runs.

The star of the game was Franzblau (now 2-3), who remained focused throughout while pitching consistent 1-2-3 innings. Although he allowed the one Cotuit run on Stock’s homer, Franzblau’s game was largely trouble-free.

Two games remain in the race for the Patriot Cup: back-to-back contests Aug. 4 and 5 in Hyannis and Cotuit, respectively.
