The Hyannis Mets kicked off the 2007 season with a home game against the Y-D Red Sox. While the boys in blue managed to score three great runs, it wasn’t enough to overtake the defending CCBL Champs who took the win 6-3.

On Saturday evening the Mets redeemed themselves, garnering a win against the Orleans Cardinals, again at their McKeon Field home.

With teams still adjusting to the season’s start, it was no surprise that there were more than a few errors to be had. The Mets were able to capitalize on four Cardinals’ errors during the second inning, earning three runs to give them the lead.

Unfortunately the Mets ran into troubles of their own during the third but staged a comeback led by Dan Brewer in the fifth. Brewer clocked a solid single that got him to first, before teammate Shane Peterson’s single allowed him to make it to third.

Kiko Vazquez brought in Brewer and led Peterson, who’d made it to second on a wild pitch, to third before being brought in by Scott Elmendorf.

After the Cardinals’ reliever, Sam Brown, walked Phil Bell, Bell stole second and scored on a double from Patrick Long. Long’s double earned the go-ahead and game winning runs, but, just in case, Dan Brewer smacked a double down the left field line to bring in Long with the Mets final run of the game.

The Kettleers battled the Mets on Sunday night in game one of the Patriot Cup race, winning by one run in a game that came down to the final out.

For the first few innings the game remained scoreless, but Hyannis eventually snagged a 3-1 lead.

A fifth inning eight-run rally lifted the Kettleers past the Mets, 9-3, however, and although the Mets closed the gap to one run, Cotuit’s Garrett Richards drew the final out and secured the 9-8 win for the Kettleers.

Monday night the Mets were back in action at McKeon Field against the Harwich Mariners, where they again proved mighty with a 6-1 win.

For this game, it was all about the third inning, when the Mets roared to life. Bell led with a single before stealing second. Next up, David Macias and Brewer each reached first, Macias hit by a pitch and Brewer a walk, to load the bases.

It was up to Mets first baseman Peterson, who singled in Bell and Macias for the first two runs of the game. Back to back throwing errors by the Mariners allowed Brewer and Peterson to cross the plate next.

In the fourth, James Darnell added some excitement to the game, and a bit of padding to the Mets lead when he slammed in a gorgeous two-run homer over the left-field wall at McKeon to bring in Peterson.

Stellar pitching from closer James Jolicouer dashed any hopes the Mariners had of rallying. In the end it was Mets 6, Mariners 1.

Darkness thwarted the Mets’ efforts to break a tie with the Bourne Braves in spite of the unexpected bonus of playing an extra inning. Garrett Sherrill continued to prove his worth and vie for that full-season contract when he pitched two more innings of shutout baseball. In spite of his efforts, however, the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

The Mets were likely longing for darkness on Wednesday as they dropped a game against Brewster 4-0.

Although Matt Daly was clocked at 95 mph on a fastball and seemed focused, one inning made the difference for the Mets.

Contrary to the score, the Mets were able to garner five hits during the game, but getting a man across the plate just didn’t happen.

At press time the Mets were scheduled to face Y-D in South Yarmouth tonight, with a game against the Mariners in Harwich on Saturday.
