SWEET BUNT – Cotuit’s Reese Havens prepares to bunt during Sunday’s Kettleers-Mets game

It’s been a wild and crazy week for the Cotuit Kettleers; in seven days, they’ve endured losses, secured wins and had their coach ejected from a game.

The coach drama ensued at Tuesday night’s home game against the Brewster Whitecaps. After watching Brewster claim what seemed to be a rock-solid lead that included the CCBL’s first grand slam of the season by Brewster’s Brad Glenn, the Kettleers slowly rallied back to take the win in the eighth – but not before Cotuit coach Mike Roberts was ejected.

After tensions arose following a disputed call against Correy Figueroa during the fifth inning, umpire Chip Osbourne tossed Roberts from the game, his first ejection of the season.

Figueroa got his in the eighth, though, when he clocked the game-winning two-run double to seal the 11-10 win and Cotuit’s five-run comeback.

Also crossing the plate in the eighth was Reese Havens, who singled before coming around on another single, a stolen base and a Whitecaps error.

Josh Harrison continued the rally for Cotuit with an RBI, while Ryne White singled to load the bases. Aaron Baker scored on a passed ball and teammate Yan Gomes walked, loading the bases again.

Although Brewster attempted to thwart the Kettleers’ efforts with a pitching change, Figueroa was ready, slamming a hit into left field to win the game.

This week the Kettleers logged wins against Chatham and Wareham and fell to Hyannis and Bourne.

On Saturday night the team was on their home turf at Lowell Field facing the Wareham Gatemen.

Catching for Cotuit was new pitcher Caleb Joseph, snagged by the Kettleers after being released by Falmouth. Cotuit’s decision to take Joseph proved smart as he ended up going 2-for-4 with three RBIs in his first outing.

While neither team boasted strong pitching, Cotuit’s bats were hot. Cotuit garnered four runs in the bottom of the first, including two scored on a double from Joseph.

Cotuit snared the lead for good when Curtis Dupart smacked his first home run of the season in the fourth. Mike Bianucci followed Dupart with a single and was brought in by Baker’s double.

Wareham attempted a rally but was stopped by Cotuit closer Garrett Richards in the top of the ninth.

On Sunday night it was hoped that Baker’s game-starting homer would set the tone for game two of the Barnstable Patriot Cup, but the Kettleers saw their hopes for a win dashed as the Mets rallied back to claim the victory.

The Kettleers were stronger against Chatham, taking the A’s 8-5 on Monday night. Bianucci and White were the stars of this night with back-to-back homeruns for the Kettleers that gave the team an unshakable lead.

J.B. Shuck earned the win for Cotuit, improving his stats to 2-0 for the season. Shuck gave up only six hits and three runs – including one earned – in six innings, while walking three and striking out one.

On Wednesday night the Kettleers fell to the Bourne Braves 4-2 in eight innings, securing first place for the Braves once again.

In spite of the loss, Cotuit saw strong play from starter Mike Cisco who allowed no walks.

Cotuit got on the board in the second when stolen bases by Joseph put him in scoring position, which he did on a ground out.

In the third Ryan Lollis hit a double to center field to bring in Figueroa. After that, Cotuit’s batters struggled against Braves’ reliever Jordan Flasher.

At press time the Kettleers were scheduled to travel to Harwich with a 5 p.m. game today in South Yarmouth against the Y-D Red Sox.
