When Aaron Baker smacked a solo home run on the first pitch of the second game between cross-town rivals Cotuit and Hyannis Sunday, Kettleers fans hoped it was a glimpse of things to come.

Unfortunately, the visitors left McKeon Field disappointed and dismayed when the Hyannis Mets rallied to claim an 8-6 victory, tying the score in the Barnstable Patriot Cup challenge at one game apiece for the town’s two teams in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

After Baker’s stellar home run, Cotuit tallied two more runs in the top of the fourth to bring the score to 3-0. Reese Havens hit an RBI single before crossing the plate himself on a throwing error by the Mets.

Cotuit’s Curtis Dupart made a terrific diving catch in the first to snag the out on a fly from the Mets’ James Darnell.

Still savoring their two previous wins, however, the Mets refused to be counted out and narrowed the score to within one during their half of the fourth on a sacrifice from Ryan Jackson and an RBI from Phil Bell.

It was Kiko Vazquez who put the Mets on top, however, when he clocked a gorgeous three-run homer, his first of the season, over the right center fence, giving Hyannis a two-run lead. “I could feel it when I hit it,” Vazquez said to a teammate. “I just watched it go over the fence.”

Hyannis padded the lead with two insurance runs in the seventh on two more RBIs from Jackson, and one more in the eighth from David Macias.

Cotuit showed signs of a rally in their half of the eighth, earning three runs to bring the score to within two, but were thwarted in the ninth when they made a base-running mistake resulting in the final out of the game.

The Kettleeers made several pitching changes in the game. Jason Rook lasted four innings against the Mets and was relieved by righty Ryan Strauss. Strauss got off to a tough start, hitting two batters, Vazquez and teammate Shane Peterson, who left the game shortly afterward.

Proving his worth as a versatile player, catcher-pitcher Robert Stock came in for Cotuit late in the game, promptly putting in a 1-2-3 inning against Mets batters.

On the mound for the Mets, Andrew Doyle was in excellent form, only throwing 63 pitches in seven innings and keeping the Kettleers guessing.

Tyler Stohr recorded his third save of the season in the ninth, taking advantage of Cotuit’s error and effectively securing the win for Hyannis.

The teams are now even in the race for the Patriot Cup with one game each. They face each other in Game Three on July 4 at 5 p.m. at McKeon Field.
