The smile on Bill Perry’s face tells the whole story. Perry, who recently completed his junior year at the University of Hartford, is living out a boyhood dream right now as he’s getting a shot in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Bourne Braves. The Falmouth resident, who graduated from FHS back in 2003, started his third game of the year for the Braves last night at Doran Field at Upper Cape Tech.

Head Coach Harvey Shapiro, who recruited Perry to play at Hartford, said that he likes what he’s seen from Perry thus far. He said that Perry, who is only signed as a temporary Cape Leaguer, has a chance to stick with the team, but only time will tell what the infielder’s ultimate fate will be. Should Perry be released by the Braves, and not be picked up by another another CCBL team, he would most likely return to the Cape Cod Braves, the local entrant in the Cranberry League, which is where he played prior to the start of Cape League play.

Perry, who was second on the team in hitting at Hartford this year with a .327 average, said that he was feeling the jitters last Friday night when he stepped into the batter’s box for the first time. “Oh yeah, I was nervous, definitely,” he said.

After grounding out the first time up, in his second AB, Perry grounded one through the hole between third and shortstop for a seeing eye single, his first CCBL knock. After rolling the fastball into left field, Perry couldn’t help but crack a big smile. “It was perfect,” he said. “It felt really good.”

Perry said that he would love to stick the whole summer with the Braves, but he realizes that all he can do is hit the ball, defend his position and hope for the best. “It’s out of my hands. I’m just going to enjoy every day and take it day by day,” he said.
