MEET ONE OF THE METS – While in Louisiana on a home-building mission, Peter and Judy Scarafile had the opportunity to meet incoming Hyannis Mets player Ryan Eden, a sophomore at the University of New Orleans. Peter is a vice president of the Hyannis Mets and Judy is president of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Several weeks ago Peter and Judy Scarafile traveled with Barnstable Town Councilor Ann Canedy to Slidell, LA to help build houses in a hurricane-ravaged neighborhood.

On an evening break from building, the two traveled with the group into New Orleans and decided to take in a baseball game at the University of New Orleans.

While the Scarafiles are baseball fans – Peter is a vice president of the Hyannis Mets and Judy is President of the Cape Cod Baseball League – their reason for taking in this game was more than just to watch. It was a chance for the two to meet 2008 Hyannis Mets player Ryan Eden.

“We were doing the build with Ann,” said Peter. “At the end of the week everyone went into New Orleans for dinner.”

Prior to their own meal, Peter and Judy helped hand out food to homeless citizens living in a tent city. While some in the group opted to tour the city, the Scarafiles instead attended batting practice for the New Orleans Privateers, where they had the opportunity to introduce themselves to Eden.

“Ryan is from Slidell and is coming here in June,” said Peter.

Eden, a sophomore outfielder, hit .286 in 27 games as a freshman for the Privateers. In high school he was an All-State and All-Metro selection during his senior year and an All-District player for all four seasons.

“I had emailed him and said we would try to hook up,” said Peter. “He’s a nice young man. I talked to him about what to expect when he comes to the Cape, what to expect in terms of competition, and about our host families.”

After joining their Cape contingency for dinner, the Scarafiles decided to return to the game, where they met Eden’s father and uncle.

“We came back to the game because he was disappointed we couldn’t stay,” said Peter. “It’s funny that everyone was going to Bourbon Street and Judy and I went to the ball game.”
