Red Sox Reliever Aardsma A Big Hit Back In Falmouth

11 July 2008

It’s not every day that a member of the Boston Red Sox comes to town, signs countless autographs and leaves with a huge smile on his face. But, that was basically the day that Boston reliever David Aardsma had yesterday.

The former Falmouth Commodore came to town to spend the day with his mother and fiancee as the guest of his former house mother Helen Kennedy, who had David in her home back in 2002. Aardsma arrived at the Gus Canty Community Center around 3 PM and was the center of attention for approximately 175 children who take part in the Rec Department’s Summer Adventure program. Aardsma signed autographs for every child who wanted one, in some cases several, and did so cheerfully. Back in 2002 he was a member of the same program’s staff.

Kennedy, who is the Recreation Department’s head administrator, was ecstatic to see her old friend back in Falmouth and bringing joy to the young faces. “He’s so good with the kids,” Kennedy said. “You don’t see a lot of guys in his position that are willing to do that, but he loves it.”

Aardsma, who would later throw out the first pitch at the Commodores game against Brewster and sign many more autographs for the fans in attendance, said he was happy to be back at his old home ballpark. “There aren’t many better ways to spend an off-day than down here in Falmouth,” he said. “I love this town, and coming back here. I have a lot of fond memories.”

In his first year with Boston, Aardsma, a first-round pick of San Francisco in 2003, is 3-2 with a 2.84 earned run average. He has appeared in 36 games, all in relief.
