Battle Of Two Elite Clubs

11 July 2008

The Cotuit Kettleers got the bats going early Wednesday night in a 10-5 victory over Bourne. Three runs in the top of the first set the tone for the night as Seth Blair (Arizona State), Brandon Cumpton (Georgia Tech), and Sam Brown (NC State) combined to hold back Bourne. Cumpton was awarded the win.

Leading 4-0 the Kettleers expanded their lead in the third with a home run by Michael Gilmartin (Wofford State). Brett Jackson (UC Berkeley) added to the Cotuit fireworks with a solo blast in the sixth.

The Kettleers finished the night with 13 hits and unlike the Braves who committed six errors, Cotuit played error free in the field.

Mike Bianucci (Auburn) finished the night 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

The Kettleers stopped a three-game losing skid on Tuesday with a 5-2 victory over Hyannis. Nick Hernandez (Tennessee) went seven strong innings for Cotuit allowing one run on six hits, while striking out eight and raising his record to 4-1 for the summer. Danny Meszaros (College of Charleston) did the rest, holding Hyannis to one run, a home run off the bat of Chris Dominguez (Louisville) in the eighth.

The Kettleers posted three runs in the bottom of the second on a single by Joey Lewis (Georgia) and a double into the left centerfield gap by Jeff Schaus (Clemson). Jason Kipnis (Arizona State) put the finishing touches on the Mets in the seventh with a two-run base hits into right field.

The Chatham Athletics dealt the Kettleers a 7-4 loss Monday at Lowell Park. Nate Garcia (Santa Clara) got the start for Cotuit lasting four-plus innings and giving up five runs on six hits. Only three of the runs were earned, however; Garcia walked six.

Chatham had two runs on the board before Kevin Patterson (Auburn) unleashed a solo shot for the Kettleers that cleared the right field fence. The Athletics then posted three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

Robert Stock (USC) connected on a pitch from Chatham right-hander Jake Thompson (Long Beach State), sending it over the right field fence and cutting the lead to 5-2.

Two Cotuit runs in the bottom of the seventh cut the Chatham lead to 5-4 as Bianucci cleared the left field fence for the third Kettleers’ home run of the afternoon.

In the top of the eighth the Athletics got to Cotuit pitcher Daniel Wolford (UC Berkeley) for two more runs. Chatham pitching then combined to retire the next six Cotuit hitters.
