Commodores’ Winning Streak Stops At 3

15 July 2008

While a 7-2 loss on Sunday afternoon cooled off the Falmouth Commodores a bit, the team is still getting things headed in the right direction as the second half of the year is now underway. Prior to the team’s loss at the hands of the Chatham Athletics before a huge crowd at the Arnie Allen Diamond at Guv Fuller Field of nearly 1,300 spectators, the Commodores had won their previous three games in a row.

The loss dropped Falmouth back to the .500 mark overall, but they are certainly in the thick of the west division playoff hunt. Hyannis has opened up some ground on the pack, improving to 16-9, thanks to a five-game win streak of its own that sees the Mets having 32 points and a four-point lead overall. Bourne, now 14-12, is in second with 28 points. Cotuit, 13-12-1, holds third place with 27 points. Falmouth, with 25 points, is in fourth. Wareham brings up the rear with just 17 points and an 8-17-1 record.

Chatham simply kept pulling away from the Commodores throughout the game on Sunday. The A’s scored single runs in the first, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to take a 4-1 lead. They then went on to put the game away with a three spot in the top of the eighth as they tagged reliever Preston Claiborne (Tulane) for five hits and three earned runs in the frame. All the Commodores could muster were single runs in the fifth and ninth innings.

Down 3-0, Falmouth looked like it might make things interesting in the fifth. Brian Fletcher (Auburn) led the inning off with a double to right and then a perfect bunt single by Ryan Jones (Wichita) put men on the corners. The potentially big inning then began to fizzle, though. After a strikeout, Kevin Nolan (Winthrop) drove in the team’s first run with a sac fly to left, scoring Fletcher. Jones was able to steal second and then AJ Pollack (Notre Dame) walked, but Chatham escaped by getting Joey Wong (Oregon State) to strike out.

After that the Commodores never threatened Chatham again. Nolan would drive in both runs in the game as he provided an RB- double in the ninth.

Apparently the Commodores used up all of its big offense on Saturday afternoon in Yarmouth. The Commodores throttled the defending Cape League champions 18-4, pounding out 19 hits in the game. Every Commodore in the lineup reached base in the game and scored at least one run. Nolan and catcher Mike Thomas (Southern) had the biggest games of the day, as each collected four hits in the contest. Thomas also drove in a team-high four runs while Nolan knocked in three. Pollack had the team’s lone homer in the game, knocking one over the wall in left in the seventh.

The Commodores put the game out of reach early on, scoring seven runs on just four hits in the first. Pollack got it going with a single to left and then Wong hit one into center to men on the corners. A run scored when Trevor Coleman reached on an error. Jim Cesario then walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Brian Fletcher made it a 2-0 game with a walk. Another K gave Y-D hopes of a quick inning, but then Thomas was hit by a pitch to drive in the team’s third of the inning. Nolan was next, and he lined a two-run single to right. Pollack, batting for the second time in the first, was next and hammered a double to make it a 7-0 game.

Aaron Loup (Tulane), who worked the middle innings for the Commodores, got the win. Loup pitched four innings, giving up just three hits with four strikeouts.

On Friday Falmouth rallied from a 2-0 deficit, scoring all of their runs in the seventh to beat Cotuit 3-2. Jim Cesario’s (Houston) two-run homer tied the game at 2-2. Then later in the inning Thomas would put Falmouth ahead with a run-scoring double, plating Darin Ruf (Creighton).

The Commodores are back in action tomorrow night when they visit Harwich; the club heads to Brewster before hosting Orleans at home on Thursday evening.
