Marathon Game Goes To Bourne

1 July 2008

It was the longest game at Fuller Field in years, but the ending was not one that the fans remaining in the stands hoped to see. In 15 innings the Bourne Braves won a 4-2 contest over the Commodores on Sunday night as Dusty Colemon, of Wichita State, launched a game-winning homer in the top of the 15th.

The loss, which is a tough one for the Commodores to have to swallow, kept the team’s winless streak intact. After a 5-2 start to the year, the team has gone 0-5-1 over its last six.

Falmouth had rallied to tie it up late in the game. Down 2-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth, the Commodores’ Ryan Jones hit his team-leading third homer of the year to tie the score as he led the frame off with a long ball over the right-center field fence.

The Commodores were held hitless over the first six innings of the game, but owned a 1-0 lead through the first three innings as they scored without a hit in the first. Leadoff man Joey Wong (Oregon State) opened the day with a walk and then went to second on a sacrifice by Jimmy Cesario (Houston). A walk to Trevor Coleman (Missouri) put two men on base for the home team and they quickly pulled off a double steal to get into scoring position. A ground ball by Darin Ruf plated Wong and Falmouth had the lead.

That would be all of the offense for a while, though, as the Braves’ Bryce Stowell settled into a groove and started setting down Commodores at will. Stowell would not walk another batter over the next five innings and struck out nine for his six hitless frames.

Bourne took the lead in the fifth on a two-run shot by Mark Krauss. The third baseman smoked a Chad Bettis over the center field wall with Ross Wilson aboard, who singled, to make it a 2-1 game.

From there the game was handed to the bullpens and the relievers did excellent work. The only run allowed until the winning two were the tying homer by Jones in the eighth.

In extra innings each team had chances earlier, but failed to plate runs. Falmouth stranded two men in the 11th while the Braves left two on in the 12th. In the 11th for the home team, Falmouth got two on with one out after a walk to Kevin Nolan (Winthrop) and a single to right by Wong. A fielder’s choice erased Wong in the middle for the second and then a groundout ended the threat.

Playing in Brockton, at Campenelli Stadium, on Saturday, the Commodores suffered another tough loss, losing 5-4 to defending champion Yarmouth-Dennis. Falmouth attempted to rally in the ninth, but scored just once and fell a run short.

Down 5-3 in their last at-bat, Nolan and Wong combined for back-to-back singles to get a rally going. A fielder’s choice by Cesario then allowed Y-D to erase the runner in the middle. Coleman came up with an RBI single to make it 5-4 and move Cesario to third, but another fielder’s choice ended the day.

Y-D scored single runs in the first and second to take the lead. Falmouth came back with three in the third to get the lead, 3-2, but the Red Sox pulled back ahead with two in the fourth and added what proved to be the winning run in the seventh.
