Cotuit Kettleers Open Season Strongly

     The Cotuit Kettleers (3-1) had one slip away Wednesday night at Red Wilson Field as Yarmouth-Dennis outslugged Cotuit in a battle of the bats, claiming a 9-8 Red Sox win. Y-D had 11 hits to 10 for the Kettleers. 

     Mario Hollands (Santa Barbara) got the start for the Kettleers, going three frames and giving up five runs on seven hits. Kevin Castner (Cal Poly) then took the hill for an inning and a third, surrendering four more runs. Cotuit held a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the third only to have the Red Sox tie the game. Y-D added another four in the fourth and tacked on the eventual game winner in the fifth.

     Mike Bianucci (Auburn) finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with a walk. He scored three runs and knocked in two, including one that came on a home run in the top of the third. Dallas Poulk (NC State) finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Hollands was tagged with the loss.

     A two-run eighth inning Tuesday night gave Cotuit a 5-3 victory over Wareham. The Kettleers took a 2-0 lead after three innings, but were unable to hold it as the Gatemen plated three runs in the fifth to take the lead.

     Jeff Schaus (Clemson) led off the Cotuit seventh with a double and came around to score on a Brett Jackson (Cal Berkley) sacrifice fly to tie the game. The Kettleers then put it away in the eighth as Robbie Shields (Florida Southern) and Kevin Patterson (Auburn) scored.

     Nate Garcia (Santa Clara) got the start and went four and a third innings allowing two runs on three hits. Alex Sogard (NC State) came in for two and two-thirds innings of relief giving up a run on three hits. Danny Meszaros (College of Charleston) finished it off with two innings of work, in which he allowed just a single hit to pick up the win.

     Jeff Schaus ended the day 3-for-4 from his designated hitter position with a run scored and an RBI.

     Cotuit scored four runs in the top of the fourth Monday on the way to a 10-4 victory over Bourne. Patterson got things rolling with a two-run triple. Jeff Kobernus (Cal Berkeley) then drove in Patterson with the third Cotuit run. Kobernus came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Bianucci.

     Brandon Cumpton (Georgia Tech) got the start for Cotuit and went four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Dan Jennings (Nebraska) came on in relief and went three frames giving up two runs and earning the win. Clay Caulfield (College of Charleston) pitched the final two innings and allowing two runs on two hits.

     Brett Jackson led off the fifth with a home run making it a 5-0 game. In the seventh the Kettleers opened the scoring with a Robert Stock (USC) triple as they plated three more runs to take an 8-0 lead.

     Bourne came back in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Cotuit added another in the top of the eighth when Jackson drove in Dan Black (Purdue). Cotuit wrapped up the scoring in the top of the ninth when Patterson hit a sacrifice play into left field, scoring Dallas Poulk (NC State). Poulk finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

     The Kettleers gave the home crowd a victory to open the season on Saturday with a 4-1 win over the Brewster Whitecaps.

     Nick Hernandez (Tennessee) gave up one run on seven hits in seven innings to get the Kettleers off to a winning start. 

     Hernandez, who struck out eight, gave way to Danny Meszaros (College of Charleston), who allowed three hits over two innings, while striking out five to get the save. Bianucci singled in the bottom of the second to score Jeff Koberns (CalBerkeley) with the first Kettleer run. Brewster tied the game in the top of the third, but Cotuit plated two in the fifth to reclaim the lead. Auburn teammates Mike Bianucci and Kevin Patterson scored in the fifth. In the seventh Poulk, who ran for Patterson who had led off the inning with a double into left centerfield, scored when Brewster pitching walked in a run.

     First baseman Kevin Peterson led the Kettleers, finishing the afternoon 2-for-3, with a run scored.
