Bourne Braves Get Off To A Slow Start

20 June 2008

The Wareham Gatemen (2-2) put up four runs in the third inning Wednesday night and added two more in the sixth on the way to a 6-0 win over the Bourne Braves (1-3). Pitching again proved to be the key in the loss for the Braves as Bourne sent four men to the mound, but couldn’t slow the Wareham bats.

Tylor Blanford (Oklahoma State) got the start for Bourne and sailed through two innings before a walk, a passed ball, and three hits resulted in four Wareham runs in the top of the third.

Zach Kenyon (Iowa) came on for two innings allowing two more runs. Bourne had six hits led by centerfielder Thomas Rafael (Oklahoma State) who went 2-for-4. The Braves gave up nine hits to the Gatemen.

The Braves earned their first win of the summer season Tuesday behind the pitching of Ricky Bowen (Mississippi State), who went six frames, allowing two runs on six hits. Bowen held back the Chatham Athletics, allowing his teammates to take a 3-0 lead after four innings before allowing a run. The Bourne bats knocked out 10 hits in the 5-2 Braves victory.

Jordan Henry (Mississippi) worked his way around the bases in the top of the first to give Bowen an early one-run lead. Chatham then gave Bourne two in the top of the fourth with back-to-back, bases-loaded walks making it 3-0. An RBI-double in the bottom of the frame put the Athletics on the scoreboard, but Bourne bounced right back with three straight base hits in the top of the fifth as Justin Bour (George Mason) drove in Jamie Johnson (Oklahoma).

A two-out double and a base hit in the bottom of the inning plated another run for the Athletics, cutting the Bourne lead to 4-2. Johnson then drove a base hit into left field scoring Sean Madigan (UCIrvine) with the final Bourne run of the night. Johnson led Bourne at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Ryan Allen (Missouri) pitched an inning and two-thirds in relief allowing just two hits and David Erickson (Connecticut) came in for the final inning and a third to pick up the save.

The Cotuit Kettleers blew open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth Monday as they dealt Bourne a 10-4 defeat. A four-hit fourth inning run staked Cotuit starter Brandon Cumpton (Georgia Tech) to a four-run lead.

Brett Jackson (Cal Berkeley) hit an inside-the-park home run in the fifth adding to the Kettleers’ lead.

Jackson picked up another RBI for Cotuit in a three-run seventh as the Kettleers opened an 8-0 lead.

Austin Knight (Dallas Baptist) drove in Bour in the bottom of the seventh with the first Bourne run followed by Ross Wilson (Alabama). Cotuit got one of those runs back in the eighth, but Bourne bounced back in the bottom of the frame and added another run.

Cotuit hit double figures in the top of the ninth with their 10th run of the game, but rather than roll over, Bourne still had plenty of fight left in them as they scratched out their fourth and final run of the night in the bottom of the ninth.

Nate Reed (Pittsburgh) took the loss for Bourne in four innings of work, in which he gave up four runs on six hits. Dan Jennings (Nebraska), who worked three innings in relief giving up two runs, got the win for the Kettleers. Second baseman Ross Wilson led the Braves at the plate, finishing the night 2-for-3 with a run scored.

For two innings it was the kind of opening day any team would want. Bourne held a 1-0 lead entering the top of the third on Saturday before Harwich put up five in the top of the third on the way to a 9-4 Mariner win. Victor Black (Dallas Baptist) had the hill for the first night game at Doran Park and pitched his way out of a first-inning jam to hold Harwich scoreless. But in the third the Mariners got to Black with four straight hits and had three runs across the plate before Bob Revesz (Louisville) took over on the mound. Two throwing errors and a walk allowed the Mariners to push two more across before the Braves could put an end to the damage.

Bourne got one back in the bottom of the third when Knight scored on a ground out by Kyle Roller (East Carolina).

Harwich moved out to an 8-2 lead before Bourne was able to get another run across. In the bottom of the sixth when Roller scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Cannon (Virginia). The Braves got their final run of the night in the seventh when Henry scored.

Black was tagged with the opening day loss, while Brian Dupra (Notre Dame) earned the win for Harwich.

Braves’ shortstop Austin Knight went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Bourne.
