Commodores Blow Lead, Rally For Tie

27 June 2008

Consecutive washout nights did nothing to cool down the Falmouth Commodores’ offense. It, however, did not help the team’s pitching staff much as the Commodores and Brewster Whitecaps found themselves involved in a slugfest on Wednesday afternoon. Falmouth sprinted out to a huge lead early, only to see the Caps come back and take the lead.

Falmouth could have been deflated, but the road team rallied in the ninth, pushing across two runs to tie the game up at 9-9. The Commodores then held back the home team in the bottom of the ninth. With darkness falling at Brewster’s light-less park, the game was halted after nine innings and declared a tie.

With one out in the ninth, the Commodores began their comeback when Darin Ruf singled to right and then Jimmy Cesario drew a base on balls against Brewster reliever Nick Christiani.

Christiani and catcher Pat Reardon then helped deliver a run for the Commodores. The tandem combined for a passed ball to allow the runners to advance to second and third, and then with Diego Seastrunk at the dish, another passed ball, this time on strike three, brought in a run and put runners on the corners with just one down.

Falmouth made the most of the gift as the next batter, Ryan Jones, delivered in the clutch to tie the ballgame. Jones singled sharply to right field, driving in the tying run to make it 9-9.

Brewster was able to avoid total implosion by getting the next two batters to keep the game tied. Justin Miller flew out to center and then Kevin Nolan fanned to end the inning.

The Commodores escaped any damage in the bottom of the frame, and preserved the tie, as Ben Tootle pitched around a leadoff walk to strike out the next three batters and end the game in a deadlock.

Early on it looked like the Commodores would run away with the ballgame. The visitors pushed two across in the first and then put up a seven spot in the top of the second to take a 7-0 lead. In the first Falmouth scored a pair without aid of a base hit as Brewster starter Mark Lamm was the victim of two errors. Lamm’s pitching line is one he would certainly rather forget as the Whitecaps starter recorded just four outs, and gave up just one hit, but allowed seven earned runs as he issued six bases on balls. He did not have a strikeout.

In the second Falmouth loaded the sacks with walks to Miller and Nolan and then a single by AJ Pollack. A fly ball by Joey Wong pushed in the first of the team’s five runs. Coleman then walked to reload the bases before Ruf did the same to drive in another run and knock the starter, Lamm, from the contest. Reliever George Claypool faced Cesario first and the Commodores’ left fielder greeted him with a two-run single to make it a 6-0 ballgame. Seastrunk was next and he singled as well, driving in another run to make it a 7-0 game.

Brewster would battle back, though. The home team chipped away, scoring one in the bottom of the second and then another in the fourth. They pushed four across to make it a one-run deficit in the fifth and then tied the game in the seventh. A two-run eighth gave the Whitecaps an improbable lead, but that set the stage for the Commodores’ comeback rally in the ninth.
