Coca-Cola
Bottling Company of Cape Cod

Each week, the Coca Cola Bottling Company of Cape Cod singles out one player and pitcher from the Cape Cod Baseball League who has performed above and beyond the call of duty. While there are certainly many players who perform well each week in the Cape League, the Coca Cola award recognizes an individual player and pitcher whose feats on the playing field in some way stand above all others. Selections are made by Sportsticker.Com , a division of Howe Sports Data.

Week # 2: 24 June: Joe Blanton and John Baker

Earning the nod for Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week for games through June 23 was none other than Big Joe Blanton of the Bourne Braves. The 6'4" Bowling Green righty was 1-0 in two starts for the Braves. Against Cotuit (6-17-01) he went seven innings scattering two hits, gave up two walks and struck out 11. On July 22, he beat Falmouth 1-0 with a six-inning two-hitter, allowing just one walk.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox slugger John Baker (UC-Berekeley) was selected as the Coca Cola Player of the Week for games through June 23 and there was little doubt as to why. In six games, the catcher/first baseman hit .429 with a 9-for-25 effort, scored five runs and had two RBI. Baker's efforts helped land the Y-D red Sox atop the standings in the East Division, but just as importantly, his rough and tumble style of play helped set the precedent for the Sox players in 2001.

Week # 3:  1 July : Casey Shumaker and Ryan Barthelemy

Bourne Braves righthander Casey Shumaker picked up two wins this week in eight innings of work, allowing no earned runs and playing an instrumental role in keeping Bourne atop the standings in the West Division. Shumaker, a 6-3 freshman at Jacksonville this spring, scattered four hits in his two appearances, struck out 10 and walked just one batter to earn Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of June 25 through July 1. He is the second Bourne hurler in three weeks to earn Pitcher of the Week honors.

Florida State slugger Ryan Barthelemy had an all-star season last summer for the Hyannis Mets, helping lead them to the CCBL title game and earning all-star honors. Upon his return to the Mets this week, Barthelemy has been on fire at the plate, amassing a whopping .900 slugging percentage with 7 hits in 20 at bats for a .350 average. In just one week, Barthelemy has three home runs with six RBI and has scored six runs. Following the announcement he had won this week's Coca Cola Player of the Week honors, he promptly ripped two doubles in a win over Bourne, helping defeat the league-leading Braves for the team's first loss in its past seven games.

In Leonard's complete, nine-ining game he scattered just five hits and walked none. Just five days earlier? Leonard hurled against the Commodores again, scattering six hits and allowing one unearned run. He struck out seven and walked just one batter. By week's end? Leonard led the entire Cape League with a 0.38 ERA.

Hyannis Mets centerfielder Kyle Frank (Clemson) took a no-holds barred approach into the batter's box last week, as the Wolfsboro, NH native went 10-24 (.417) with eight runs scored, two doubles, one triple and one home run. Frank added eight RBI and two stolen bases to his offensive output, and in so doing earned the distinction of being named Coca Cola Cape League Player of the Week. Week # 8: 5 August  : Luke Robertson and Jon Kaplan

In a complete-game victory on Aug. 3 against first place Y-D, Robertson allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out nine to earn him the Coca Cola Cape League Pitcher of the Week honor for the season's final week.
