Michael John Remlinger
Atlanta Braves
LHP · #37
Following a brilliant
career at Plymouth-Carver High School (Class of 1984), Remlinger went on
to stardom at Dartmouth College where he led the nation with a 1.59 earned
run average in his sophomore season (1985-1986). In his junior year at
Dartmouth, Remlinger earned second-team All-American honors, leading the
NCAA with 14.0 strikeouts per nine innings pitched and in the summer of
1987 he landed near home to play for the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod
Baseball League. In the Cape League, playing with such fellow future Major
Leaguers as Mo Vaughn and pitching against the likes of Jeff Bagwell (Chatham
A's '87-88), Albert "Joey" Belle (Chatham/Hyannis, '87-'88) and Gary DiSarcina
(Harwich, '87), Remlinger caught further attention from Big League scouts
and he was selected in the first round (16th pick overall) in the 1987
free-agent draft.
While Remlinger toiled
in the Majors as a starter for San Francisco, New York (NL) and Cincinnati,
he landed squarely with the Braves in 1999 as the team's set-up man from
the bullpen and had, arguably, his best season ever (10-1), ending with
an appearance in the 1999 World Series versus the New York Yankees. In
1999, Remlinger appeared in a career-high 73 games, had the most wins by
a Braves' reliever since Cecil Upshaw in 1971, finished the regular season
with an eight-game winning streak and had a 2.37 earned run average. Photo
